A couple weeks ago, Kinwell received some passes to the Unashamed Tour led by Reach Records. If you haven’t heard of Reach Records, they are a record label started by Lecrae. One of the artists, Andy Mineo, was generous enough to make sure our students had the time of their lives at the show. He spent time playing basketball and chatting it up with our kids and they’ll never forget it. Andy has done this a couple times over the last several years and I’m always impressed with the depth and knowledge these guys have.
There’s a quote I heard somewhere that said “Your theology isn’t proven in what you say, but in how you treat those around you.” Our students felt like they could call Andy a friend after those 30 minutes with him.
After hanging out backstage, they put on a show of a lifetime. The crowd was rockin’ and we were blown away by the talent and creativity on the stage. I don’t go to many concerts, but this got me wanting more. Our students loved the show. Jeremiah is a big hip-hop fan and he’s been to a bunch of big shows. On our drive home, I asked him where this one ranks, he said “10 out of 10! Best show I’ve been to.”
I left there challenged to continue the conversation Andy and crew left with our students. That conversation started with availability. They allowed the students into their world and made them feel accepted. From there the soil was ready for seeds of truth.
I spend time praying for our students and the conversations we have. I’ll keep praying but maybe I need to make sure my focus is solely on them when we’re in a room together and give them the affection and attention they deserve. I think God will work with that.
